Football hasn’t been given the moniker “the beautiful game” for no reason- the sport is renowned for stunning feats of athleticism, skill and imagination. No more is this evident in some of the incredible goals that have been produced on the football field, those goals that make you sit up out of your seat and say “wow”.
Here are 5 of the best football goals ever:
George Weah vs. Verona (1996)
It's not often that a country’s president is also renowned for scoring one of the best goals of all time. George Weah, a former striker and the former President of Liberia, scored an absolute pearler for AC Milan against Verona in 1996. Weah captured a ball off of a Verona corner kick in his own box and proceeded to sprint down the field and dribble past two defenders in the centre circle. He then managed to push through the rest of the defenders and score an epic goal. Click here to watch
Roberto Carlos vs. France (1997)
While Brazil’s Roberto Carlos scored some incredible goals in his career and was known for having a rocket boot, this goal really stood out. In a friendly match against France in 1997, Carlos lined up the ball from a long-distance free kick as goalkeeper Fabien Barthez placed his wall. The Brazilian proceeded to take a massive shot that somehow got through the wall and past Barthez with a massive spin. It remains one of the most jaw-dropping goals that you will ever see. Zlatan Ibrahimovic vs. England (2012)
Not many players possess the joyous flair of Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic , a quality that he demonstrated in spades when he scored an out-of-this-world goa in a friendly against England in 2012. With Sweden leading 3-2, Ibrahimovic scored from a no-look bicycle kick after England goalkeeper Joe Hart headed the ball poorly out of the area. This wonder goal is is still considered one of the best goals in a friendly match ever. Click here to watch
Lionel Messi vs. Getafe (2007)
Argentina’s Lionel Messi is considered one of the best football players of all time and has scored so many wondrous goals. During his time at Barcelona F.C., he was a human highlight reel scoring 672 goals. Perhaps his best goal was scored during the 2007 season, as he pulled off a goal that Diego Maradona would be proud of. At full speed, Messi dribbled past the Getafe midfielders, defenders, and goalkeeper, before placing the ball in the back of the net. Click here to watch
Diego Maradona vs England (1986)
The two sides of Argentinian great Diego Maradona were on full display during Argentina’s famous quarterfinal against England in the 1986 World Cup. After initially scoring one of the most infamous goals of all time (the “hand of god” goal whereby Maradona used his fist to punch the ball into the net to give Argentina a 1-0 lead), Maradona proceeded to score one of the most famous goals of all time. Battling a dodgy pitch and the altitude of Azteca Stadium in Mexico, Maradona received the ball in midfield, and with 11 touches in only 11 seconds, dribbled past every England player who tried to stop him. Despite falling to his side, Maradona managed to shoot the ball past the England goalkeeper to record one of the best goals of all time, often by many to be the “Goal of the Century.” Click here to watch
