The Springboks completed a clean sweep on their annual end-of-year tour to the Northern Hemisphere, winning all 3 games its played against Scotland, England and Wales. This represented the first time since 2013 that the Bokke had enjoyed a clean sweep on its end-of-year tour, and capped a highly successful 2024 season. The Springboks achieved this despite chopping and changing the team from game to game.
Take a look at our review of the Springboks’ end-of-year tour:
Scotland v South Africa (15-32)
The Springboks got their tour of to a winning start when they beat Scotland 32-15. While the Boks weren’t at their best, they still managed to keep Scotland try-less while scoring 4 tries themselves through 3 first-half tries from winger Makazole Mapimpi (2 tries) and prop Thomas Du Toit, while 8th man Jasper Wiese scored a try late in the 2nd half.
The Bokke’s performance was a little bit error-ridden at times, but the team still showed enough finesse and moments of magic to see off Scotland, including the two cross-kicks that led to Mapimpi’s tries.
England v South Africa (20-29)
This match was probably South Africa’s toughest assignment on tour as they ground out their 3rd consecutive win over England. The Boks went behind 7-0 early after a try by England wing Ollie Sleightholme but immediately hit back through a brilliant break by scrumhalf Grant Williams that led to a converted try.
The Bokke then scored two more tries through Pieter-Steph du Toit and Cheslin Kolbe while England hit back through a Sam Underhill try to trail 19-17 at halftime. In the second half, England briefly took the lead 20-19 through a penalty, but South Africa regained the lead with a Pollard penalty and a 2nd try to Kolbe, which Pollard converted.
Ultimately, the Springboks held on for a 29-20 win. While the Springboks were once again not at its best, the World Champions displayed enough quality to see off a tough England team that had lost narrowly to the All Blacks and Wallabies in the preceding fortnight.
Wales v South Africa (12-45)
A poor Welsh team were no match for the Springboks in a one-sided game. The Boks absolutely dominated the first half, racing to a 26-0 lead through tries from Franco Mostert, Eben Etzebeth, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Elrigh Louw. Wales scored a try right at the end of the half through Ben Thomas, to make it 2605 at halftime.
The Springboks scored further tries through Aphelele Fassi, Gerhard Steenekamp and Jordan Hendrikse, before Wales got another consolation try through James Botham. The final result of 12-45 was indicative of the depth in class between the No.1 ranked Boks and the 11th ranked Wales, who didn’t win a match in 2024.
